Camping and Racing in Salida

The view from the tent trailer was nice. Axel says, "Welcome to our camp." We're a bit concerned about river levels. We played hackey sac around camp until Axel stole the bag from us. Axel shows off some of his "nearly two" dexterity. We set up camp in the rain, after it stopped the kids tromped around the site. Jon is pensive. Not really, but it does look like that. The short-sleeve jersey comes to Axel's knuckles. Jon and Christian work together in the crit. Another racer, Ian MacGregor, got mad at Jon for taking a corner wide and they got into a scuffle after the race. Jon says that he always liked Ian and is sorry that Ian was so mad. Ian threatened to "chop" him in their next race if Jon does something Ian doesn't like. This pisses me off but I guess testosterone-laden racer boys will be boys! As for my race, I lapped one girl twice! Which put me in second to last place. At least that is up from last weekend's last place. N

Rocking the 'stache

Jon and I were talking at dinner and I just couldn't keep a straight face. With the 'stache, sunglasses, and the white jeans, he looks like someone from Miami Vice.

Leaning Tree Criterium

Thanks to Chris and Barb for a great DBC Event. It was nice to have my first race back on such a good course and put on by friends. Way to go DFT team, if it weren't for the late crash, we all would've been in there for the sprint. Here's the Pook's-Eye view of the race: 9:00 Started drinking my sponsored Rumba Energy Juice 9:15 Need to race, NOW, because the Rumba waits for no one 9:20 Go! 9:21 Finally clipped in (I'm exaggerating slightly - but still) Lap 1 Title Nine Team attacks twice and I cover both moves Lap 2 Title Nine Team attacks two more times and I am towing the field around Lap 3 Now I know I was being an idiot blowing myself up like that and I try to sit in. The damage is done. My teammates Cory, Joy, and Davian are all looking good and I'm hanging in by a shoestring. At one point Cory came around me and told me to get on her wheel, thanks Cory! Geez it is nice having a team. Mid Race Speaking of teams, TITLE NINE, holy cow. They w

Conspiracy at Cascade

In the photo above, note the list of race comminques. Race communique 1 would've told us about the time trial time cut (see post below)... but it was and is still not on the website.

Can You Believe This?

Jon, not wanting to unpack his time trial bike (see large box pictured below) decided to just roll through the time trial on his road bike... saving himself for later stages. After all, the race bible, pictured below, clearly says time cuts will not be applied to time trials. Well, Jon showed up for the crit this evening and was told he was not allowed to race because he didn't make the time cut in the time trial. What about the race bible? Well in a comminque that was not posted to the website they made a last minute decision to enact a time cut. 10 elite men were screw-barred out of the race. Comments? Notes of sympathy for Jon?

Axel at the Bend Children's Museum

He liked the kayak.

I Whine About Having So Much Work

Jon says, "You just need to work more." Ha.

Garmin Slipstream

Many of you may have saw Garmin Chipotle rider Will Frischkorn get second on stage 3 of Le Tour last week but they also have a squad at the Cascade Cycling Classic. Here I am driving in the Slipstream of their support cars because my Garmin Nuvi GPS is telling me to. If only I was eating a burrito...

Another Day Another River

Today's ride was a scenic river route along the Deschutes... which makes me think of Deschutes Brewery's Black Butte Porter. Mmmm... local here in Bend.

Crater Lake

Here we are at the deepest lake in the country. Jon is riding on the rim road around the lake, later I'm going to ride around the smaller Diamond Lake, which has a nice mountain bike trail. Parts of the rim road are still snowed in as they get 40 foot high drifts here. Yikes. Crater Lake is not fed by any waterways, just rain and runoff from snow around the rim.

Mountain Biking the Rogue River - Oregon

From camp... sweet single track... for a long long way! Doesn't get much better than that. Near the halfway point I busted my granny gear from over torqu-ing it on the steep rollers so I had to detour on an OHV road with less topography. Stopped by the river and took a few pics.

Lil Liza Jane

Leah and Dara in their rendition of Lil Liza Jane. I miss Leah, she's in Washington until July 23rd. This video was taken at my friend Laura's house, by Laura, in June. Thanks dear!

The Opposite of Burying Your Head in the Sand

Jon buried Axel and Cousin Alex in the sand. We spent the afternoon at Samoa Dunes playing in the sand, disc golfing (Scott and Lena have their own folding disc golf catcher), and lazing about.

Axel at Clam Beach

We built an alien looking sand sculpture as well as a bear head.

Defined Fitness Training - QA3 Financial Racing Team

Well, I've joined a Cat 4 women's racing team . Yes, that is right, Pooks is back in the pack! My first race will be the Salida Time Trial and Crit - skipping the road race because I have no base and a climbing road race for me would be a bike ride that cost $35. The Team Director and Cat 1 racer, Megan Hottman, mentioned the following product purchases that could help our team. 1) SKINS -- http://www.definedfitnesstraini ng.com/SKINS -- You can see all products available at skins.net but must order through Megan - She'll offer 25% off retail prices. 2) VEMMA -- http://www.myvemma.com/DFT

Epic Cruiser-ing

When I visit Redding, Dad and I always go on a bike-about on the single speed 500 pound cruiser bikes. Today we went on what I would call a tour of the firelands. We've breathed about a pack of cigarettes worth of wildfire smoke and hung out with the CDF guy at the Igo Bar where he gave us fire updates. We took slow shallow breaths and stopping at watering holes liberally during our 5 hour epic. In the pic you see dad at the Mule Town road sign, for the back story on that road see Epic Cruiser Ride part one from June 2007.
