Back Home

Last Tuesday I flew back to Sacramento from Honolulu. Robert gave me a lift to the airport and Jon picked me up. Such sweet Baker men, thanks fellas.

On Wednesday I realized how much I miss surfing and swimming and the water so I ordered a wetsuit from Amazon and resolved to swim in the lake even though the water is still cold. I hatched a wild plan to ride a bike to Lower Scott’s Flat Lake via the DS Canal trail and get into the 50 degree water right at the lower dam. The idea was to don the wetsuit from a backpack, lock up the bike, and swim a whole bunch, then, when finished, reverse the process.

Today was the day I attempted that. It was a failure. I did not listen to Jon and rode my road bike instead of the mountain bike. About 6 miles in, and only 500 meters away from the lake, flat tire. Then I discovered I had no pump. Luckily Axel was home and answered the phone and rode a pump out to my location on his eBike. What a guy.

With all the uncertainty surrounding the flat tire I decided a 5pm swim in 50 degree water was probably not the wisest course of action, so I went home. I will try again, maybe earlier in the day and definitely on the mountain bike. I’ll let you know how it goes.

In other news, Jon went all beast mode up in Bend, Oregon over the weekend and won the Omnium title at the Cascade Gravel Grinder. Read more about his adventure at VeloNews.

Axel had a winning weekend as well with lacrosse games on Saturday and Sunday. His team, Gold Country Stampede, won both their games, Axel having several touches, some nice passes, and two assists. At the first game my parents came down to watch and surprised us with Aunt Muffie and Uncle Telpher also joining from Stockton. What a treat. I had not seen them in forever. Afterwards we all went out to lunch and caught up a bit.

Margaret was able to come to Axel’s Sunday game and we chatted on the sidelines as Axel’s team went nearly goal to goal with the visiting Sacramento team. Then, right at the end, they pulled out the game winning shot and Stampede won 8-7. Later that night Axel and I went out to Alloro Cucina Italiana in Grass Valley and had a decadent celebration.

Me and Aunt Muffie and Mom and Axel at lunch.

Margaret and I at Sunday’s game where the visiting team had strict protocols for our team and the spectators. The boys wore masks while playing and all the people on the sidelines did too, regardless of distancing or vaccine status.

Jon sent me a cute selfie of him in his leader’s jersey.

Speaking of cute, my hot date Sunday night, preparing the bread dip.
