Road Rager

The woman in this car, angry because I was riding my bike in the road (I was in the left lane to make a left turn), pulled dangerously close to my rear wheel and honked. She proceeded to swerve to the side of the road, running Jon and Axel in the trailer into the curb.

She called the police because Jon called her the B word. I asked her why she was trying to run me down and she said bikes aren't allowed in the roadway. Ha. Jon should've called her something worse. We have a court date May 20th.

Umm, wow.

I would expect that kind of behavior from someone in TX but not someone in Boulder.

Was she from TX by any chance?

Glad you guys were not hurt.

What a maniac. Was this car person new to the area? I hope the judge throws the book at her. Maybe she should have her driver's license taken away. Make her ride a bike.

The real downer is that Jon was also issued a ticket for harassment... because he called her a bad word. Hopefully the arbiter of all this will see that Jon was just calling her by the appropriate title.

What she did amounts to the same thing as running down a person pushing a baby buggy in a crosswalk. That kind of behavior is really frowned upon. I can't think of a punishment harsh enough.

Wowwww is right. Best of luck and do keep us posted.

More details, what was she charged with? If Jon were a police officer, it would have been assault.

Be VERY prepared when you go to court. People who do not ride do not tend be impartial.

It is surprising to hear that coming from someone in the area. Maybe she was just having a bad day!!

ps. It's so good to hear about what's going on in your life. I look forward to hearing more.

I think you're right, Tara, that she may have just been having a bad day. The best thing cyclists can do to foster good community attitudes toward the sport is to be the bigger person in these situations. But it is hard when your adrenaline is sky high ;)

By the way, how the heck are you???? I'm coming to California next month and would love to have a beer and/or kick the footbag! Are you still in Chico?

Could you file reckless driving charges against her? What about attempted vehicular manslaughter? Any witnesses? Running you off the road (especially with a baby in tow) seems like a criminal offense? I do not think the hate language law in Boulder was designed for words like bitch. That is free speech right? I think it was made for hateful words that would down someone's race or sex or something like that. How could a person on a bike threaten someone in a SUV? That's like pointing a slingshot at a tank and getting a ticket for endangering the tank. Sometimes cops make mistakes. Everybody does. That harassment ticket should be thrown out.
